Upwork fees 2026: how much it costs to work on Upwork, with a free calculator

How much does it cost to work on Upwork? Fees and a free calculator

Joining Upwork is free, but working on it is not. Once you add up Upwork fees, Connects and withdrawal charges, freelancers in the three examples below give up between 10.7% and 22.1% of what they bill. The calculator in this post shows how many proposals your monthly budget buys.

We manage Upwork bidding for agencies, consultants and freelancers, and we have been on the platform for 11 years. The headline service fee is the cost most people know about. The Connects you burn on proposals that never get a reply, and the small charges on every withdrawal, are the ones that quietly move your real take-home rate.

Connects cost $0.15 each and are bought in packs of 10 ($1.50 a pack). Estimates based on Upwork’s published pricing in October 2026. The Connects a job needs are shown on each job post.

Three worked examples

All three use Freelancer Basic and a direct-to-bank withdrawal at $0.99. Only the billings, the service fee on the contract and the bidding volume change.

In other words, the new freelancer pays twice the share of the established one. Part of that is the higher fee on small contracts, but most of the gap is Connects: $70.50 is 7% of a $1,000 month, while $52.50 is under 1% of an $8,000 month. Bidding volume is the cost that punishes you most when you are starting out.

Where the real cost hides

The service fee is set per contract

Upwork no longer charges everyone a flat rate. The fee runs from 0% to 15% depending on the contract type and on supply and demand, and Upwork shows it before you submit a proposal or accept an offer. Once the contract starts, the rate stays fixed. As a result, you can see the cost of a job before you spend a single Connect on it, and you should.

Connects are paid for every proposal, won or lost

A proposal costs anywhere from a handful of Connects to 15 or more, plus whatever you add to boost it. You pay whether the client reads it or not. That is why reply rate matters more than volume: doubling your reply rate halves what each conversation costs you. We break this down in what it costs to win a client on Upwork. Invites are the other way in: a profile that Uma Recruiter picks out for a client gets you in front of them without a cold bid.

Freelancer Plus rarely pays for itself on Connects alone

Plus costs $19.99 a month and includes 100 Connects. At $0.15 each, that is $15 worth, and Basic already gives you 10 free. So if you bid heavily, Plus works out about $6.49 a month more expensive than buying the same Connects on Basic. It earns its place when you bill clients through Direct Contracts, where it cuts the fee from 5% to 0%, or when you use its competitor bid insights to choose jobs. The calculator above tells you which side of that line you are on.

Withdrawals and currency conversion

Direct to local bank costs $0.99 a withdrawal, which is small enough to ignore if you withdraw once or twice a month. Wire transfers at around $30 each add up quickly on smaller amounts. If you withdraw through PayPal into another currency, the conversion margin (PayPal quotes 3% above the base rate) is usually the biggest withdrawal cost of all. In short, fewer and larger withdrawals to a local bank keep this line close to zero.

Tax on Upwork’s own charges

In some countries, tax is added on top of Upwork’s fees and Connects purchases. Freelancers in India, for example, may see GST on these charges. Check your Upwork invoices and add the rate to the calculator if it applies to you.

Upwork fees for clients

In addition, clients pay their own fees on top of what you bill. On a Basic client account, Upwork adds a marketplace fee of 3% or 5% to each payment and a contract initiation fee on every new contract. Business Plus clients pay 8% or 10% with no monthly subscription. None of this comes out of your earnings, but it is part of why clients compare your rate with off-platform options.

How to lower your Upwork fees

  • Check the service fee shown on a job before you bid, and factor it into the rate you quote.
  • Send fewer, better proposals. A higher reply rate cuts your Connects cost faster than any discount.
  • Choose Freelancer Plus for Direct Contracts or bid insights, not for the Connects.
  • Withdraw less often, in larger amounts, to a local bank rather than by wire or PayPal.
  • Grow long-term clients. Repeat contracts cost no Connects, so your real cost falls every month they continue.

Common questions

Is Upwork free to join?

Yes. A Freelancer Basic account is free and includes 10 Connects a month. You start paying once you buy more Connects to bid or once a client pays you and the service fee is deducted.

How much does Upwork take from freelancers?

Upwork’s service fee is between 0% and 15% of each payment, set per contract and shown before you submit a proposal. Add Connects and withdrawal charges and the real cost in our examples ranges from 10.7% to 22.1% of billings.

How much does one Connect cost?

One Connect costs $0.15, and you buy them in packs of at least 10. A single proposal can use anywhere from a few Connects to 15 or more.

Is Freelancer Plus worth $19.99 a month?

Not for the Connects alone: the 100 Connects it includes are worth $15. It is worth it if you bill clients through Direct Contracts, where it removes the 5% fee, or if you use its bid insights to pick jobs.

Do clients pay Upwork fees too?

Yes. Basic clients pay a 3% or 5% marketplace fee on each payment plus a contract initiation fee. These fees are added on top of what you bill and do not reduce your earnings.
