Why Upwork accounts get suspended (and how to avoid it)
Most Upwork suspensions are not random. They come from a short list of rule breaks, and nearly all of them are avoidable once you know where Upwork draws the lines. If your account is already suspended, the only route back is Upwork’s own appeal process, and we cover how to use it properly below.
We have been on Upwork for 11 years and have helped 200+ clients with their Upwork bidding, so we see the same habits put good accounts at risk again and again. This guide covers what triggers suspensions, how to check where your account stands, and how to appeal. It will not tell you how to get around a ban. There is no safe way to do that, and anyone selling one is selling you more risk.
- Keep every conversation and payment on Upwork until a contract starts, and keep payments there for two years unless the conversion fee is paid.
- One person, one main account. Never share your login, even with your own team.
- Write every proposal for the job in front of you. Repetitive, copy-paste proposals count as spam.
- Check Account health in your profile menu regularly so problems surface early.
- If you are suspended, appeal once, with new information. Never open a second account.
Suspended, restricted or under review: what each one means
Upwork’s Account health hub (click your profile picture, then Account health) shows two things. Platform access tells you whether you have full access (Normal), limited access that needs action (Restricted) or a suspended account (Revoked). Account standing shows how your activity lines up with Upwork’s policies, from Good to At risk, High risk and Blocked.
A restriction is not always about misconduct. Identity verification holds, payment or billing problems and compliance checks can all limit an account, and many of these can be fixed yourself from the banner in your account. A revoked account is a suspension, and that is where the appeal process comes in.

The 9 most common reasons Upwork suspends accounts
These come straight from Upwork’s Trust and Safety rules. Upwork can respond to a violation with education, restrictions or a permanent block, so a first mistake does not always end an account, but repeated or serious ones do.
| Reason | What it looks like | How to stay safe |
|---|---|---|
| Taking payments off Upwork | A client suggests paying by bank transfer or PayPal to “save on fees” | Keep work and payments on Upwork for the first two years, or pay the conversion fee |
| Moving the conversation off-platform early | Sharing WhatsApp, email or a phone number before a contract starts | Stay in Upwork Messages until a contract is in place |
| Running more than one account | A second freelancer account, or a new one after a block | One main account per person. Agency and client profiles sit inside it |
| Sharing your login | A VA, bidder or friend signs in as you | Use Upwork agency roles so everyone works under their own login |
| A fake name, photo or experience | A business name as your profile name, a stock photo, inflated skills | Real name, a real head-and-shoulders photo, accurate work history |
| Manipulating feedback | Friends hiring you for reviews, paying for feedback, pressuring clients | Earn feedback from real work for real clients |
| Spammy proposals | The same template sent to dozens of unrelated jobs | Write each proposal for the job in front of you |
| Padding hours | Logging time you did not work on an hourly contract | Log only the hours you actually worked |
| Prohibited work or terms | Charging a fee to submit a proposal, offering free work, restricted services such as fake reviews | Check Upwork’s Trust and Safety rules before taking an unusual job |
Circumvention is the fastest way to lose an account
Upwork calls paying outside the platform circumvention, and it has a zero-tolerance policy on it. Its terms require work and payments with a client you met on Upwork to stay there for the first two years. The legitimate way out is the conversion fee: 13.5% of the freelancer’s estimated annual earnings, worked out as 13.5% × hourly rate × 2,080 hours. At $30 an hour that is $8,424. Expensive, but far cheaper than losing an account with years of feedback on it.
What would it cost to take a client off Upwork legally?
Upwork’s conversion fee is 13.5% × hourly rate × 2,080 hours. Enter your rate to see it.
One account, used by one person
Each person can have one main Upwork account. You can run a freelancer profile, an agency and client profiles inside it, but holding a second main account can lead to suspension, and deleting an account does not let you open a new one. Upwork is equally clear that only the account holder should use the account. Handing your password to a virtual assistant or a bidder is account sharing, even if that person works for you.
Proposal spam is the quiet risk
Upwork prohibits content that is unclear, irrelevant, repetitive or spammy. Sending one template to every job in your category is how many freelancers end up on the wrong side of that rule without ever doing anything dishonest. It also wastes Connects. See how much it costs to work on Upwork to put a number on that.

How to check your account health
- Log in and click your profile picture.
- Select Account health.
- Check your Platform access and Account standing.
- Read any holds, warnings or open Trust and Safety reviews, and follow the suggested next steps.
Make this a monthly habit, especially if more than one person helps run your Upwork activity.
How to appeal an Upwork suspension
Upwork’s appeal process depends on whether you can still log in.
Can you still log in to Upwork?
What makes an appeal work
Upwork says most appeals are reviewed within two business days, and the final decision arrives by email. An appeal needs to show either that a mistake was made or new information that changes the facts. Disagreeing with the decision on its own rarely succeeds.
- Send one appeal, not several. Duplicate tickets slow the review down.
- Include evidence: screenshots, contract details, verification documents, whatever shows the facts were different.
- If the suspension relates to ongoing client feedback concerns, Upwork asks you to wait six months before appealing.
- If a denial is final, further appeals may be blocked unless genuinely new information comes up.
What not to do after a suspension
How to get help with bidding without risking your account
Plenty of freelancers and agency owners hand bidding to someone else because they are busy delivering. That is fine, as long as it happens through Upwork’s own tools. In an Upwork agency, a team member with the business manager role can submit, edit and withdraw proposals on behalf of agency members, using the agency’s shared Connects. An Agency Plus plan is needed for most proposals. Nobody needs your password.
Whoever bids for you should also write each proposal for the job, keep every conversation inside Upwork until a contract starts, and never suggest moving payment off the platform. Our Upwork bidding service is built around exactly these rules, and our Upwork profile optimization work keeps your name, photo and experience accurate as well as persuasive.
Common questions
Can I create a new Upwork account after a suspension?
No. Upwork allows one main account per person, and if an account is restricted or blocked you cannot create a new one. Deleting an account does not change that. The route back is an appeal.
How long does an Upwork appeal take?
Upwork says most appeals are reviewed within two business days. The final decision is sent by email, and if you can log in you can follow progress in the Appeals Tracker.
Will Upwork tell me why my account was suspended?
If you can still log in, the suspension banner in your account shows the reason and the next steps. If you cannot log in, reply to the suspension email.
Can I share my WhatsApp or email with a client on Upwork?
Not before a contract is in place. Keep early conversations in Upwork Messages, and keep payments on Upwork for the first two years of the relationship.
Is it against Upwork rules for someone else to bid for me?
Sharing your login is. Upwork supports delegated bidding through agencies, where a team member with the business manager role submits proposals under their own login using the agency’s Connects.
