Should you boost your Upwork profile? Yes, once it is ready to convert
Yes, you should boost your Upwork profile, but only after the profile itself is ready to turn the clicks you pay for into invites. Boosting buys attention. Your profile decides whether that attention becomes work.
We manage Upwork accounts for agencies, consultants and freelancers, and we have been on the platform for 11 years. Boosted Profiles is one of the few paid features on Upwork where you only pay when a client actually engages with you. That makes it worth testing for most established freelancers. It also makes a weak profile expensive, because every click lands on it.
Boost your Upwork profile if it is complete, clearly positioned and has proof of results. You pay Connects only when a client clicks, saves, invites or hires you, and you control the daily or total spend. If your profile is not ready, fix it first. Otherwise you pay to send clients to a page that does not convince them.
What is a boosted Upwork profile?
A Boosted Profile is Upwork’s way of promoting your profile to clients who are browsing for freelancers in your work category. You choose a category and specialty, bid a number of Connects per click, and Upwork shows your profile in promoted spots with a “Boosted” label. The higher your bid, the more likely you are to appear near the top. Upwork’s own guide to boosting your profile covers the mechanics.
It is different from boosting a proposal. A boosted proposal pushes one application higher in one client’s list. A boosted profile puts you in front of clients while they are browsing for people to invite, often before they have picked anyone.
How much does it cost to boost your Upwork profile?
You are charged Connects when a client engages with your boosted profile. According to Upwork, that means a client:
- clicks on your profile while it is being promoted
- saves your profile
- selects “Invite to job” or “Hire”
- views your boosted profile video, if you have one
If the same client clicks several times for the same job post, you are charged once. You set the Connects per click, a daily or total spending limit, and an optional end date. Use the estimator below to see what a month could cost.

Estimate only, at $0.15 per Connect. Real clicks depend on your category, your bid and competition. Your daily or total limit caps the spend either way.
Why we recommend boosting your profile
1You pay for engagement, not impressions
No charge for being shown. You pay when a client clicks, saves, invites or hires, so spend tracks real interest.
2You reach clients before they choose
Proposals only reach clients who have already posted a job. A boosted profile reaches clients who are still browsing for people to invite.
3Invites flip the dynamic
When a client invites you, they chose you first. You start the conversation as a shortlisted option, not one of dozens of applicants.
4The spend is fully controlled
Daily or total caps, an end date, and a pause whenever your calendar fills up. You can test small and scale what works.
Boosting buys attention. Your profile decides whether that attention becomes work.
Is your profile ready to boost?
Every click you pay for lands on your profile. Since Upwork retired Specialized Profiles in May 2026, your single profile has to do all the work, and Upwork decides which skills and portfolio pieces to highlight for each client. Tick everything that is true today.

Should you boost a new Upwork profile?
Boosting can get a new profile seen, but visibility is not the hard part for a new freelancer. Proof is. A client who clicks through and finds no reviews, no Job Success Score and a thin portfolio has little reason to invite you, and you have still paid for the click.
For a new profile, we recommend getting the basics in place first: a specific title, a strong overview, portfolio pieces that show finished work, and one or two contracts won through proposals. Then start boosting with a small daily cap in the category where your proof is strongest.
How to boost your Upwork profile, step by step
- Go to Find work and select the pencil icon next to Boost your profile.
- Choose the work category and specialty you want to be promoted in.
- Enter the number of Connects you want to pay per click.
- Set a spending limit and choose whether it is daily or total.
- Optionally set an end date.
- Confirm, then track results in My Stats.
How to tell if your boost is working
Upwork shows boost performance in My Stats. Look past the clicks and follow them through to work:
- Clicks to invites: are clients who click going on to invite you? If not, the profile is the problem, not the bid.
- Invites to interviews: are you replying fast enough, and are the invites from the right kind of client?
- Cost per invite: Connects spent divided by invites, times $0.15. Compare it with what a proposal-won client costs you.
- Category by category: keep the categories that turn clicks into invites, and pause the rest.
Our boosting playbook
This is how we run profile boosts for the accounts we manage.
AFix the profile first
We run the readiness check above before anything else. A boost on an unready profile is the most expensive mistake we see.
BBoost one category at a time
Pick the specialty where your portfolio and reviews are strongest, so clicks land on your best proof.
CStart with a small daily cap
Run a modest bid for a week or two, check My Stats, then raise the bid only where clicks are turning into invites.
DPause when you are busy
Invites you cannot answer quickly are wasted Connects. Set an end date or pause when your calendar is full.
When not to boost your profile
- Your title and overview are generic
- Your portfolio does not match the category
- You have no time to answer invites
- Your calendar is already full
Boosted profile vs boosted proposal
| Boosted profile | Boosted proposal | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | Clients browsing your category | One client, on one job post |
| When you pay | When a client clicks, saves, invites or hires | When you boost the proposal |
| Best for | Getting invited by clients who are still browsing | Standing out on a job you really want |
| Depends most on | Profile quality | Proposal quality |
The two work best together. If proposals are your main channel, our Upwork lead generation service handles the bidding side while the boost brings in invites.
Common questions
Is boosting your Upwork profile worth it?
For most freelancers with a complete, well-positioned profile, yes. You only pay when a client engages, and you control the spend. If your profile is not ready, fix it first, because every paid click lands on it.
How much does an Upwork profile boost cost?
You set the Connects per click and a daily or total limit. Each Connect costs $0.15, so the cost depends on your bid and how many clients engage.
What counts as a click on a boosted profile?
A client clicking your profile while it is promoted, saving it, selecting Invite to job or Hire, or viewing your boost video. You are charged once per client for the same job post.
Can any freelancer boost their Upwork profile?
Yes, any freelancer can boost. Adding a video to your boost has extra eligibility criteria, such as a Top Rated badge or $1K+ in lifetime earnings.
Do clients know my profile is boosted?
Yes. Clients see a “Boosted” label. Upwork tells clients it means you are investing in visibility, not that you are a better fit, so your profile still has to make the case.
